Scholarship Program
From its inception, our Club Founders set a goal of establishing scholarships to assist worthy Greek-American students. In 1939, the first scholarship was awarded in the name of Dr. Michael Dorizas, a widely-respected academician and athlete. In 1959, an interest-free loan program was organized which continued for ten years. Our Scholarship Grant Program was reestablished in 1971, and an outright grant of $1000 was awarded to a college-bound student with outstanding academic qualifications and financial need.
Since then our Scholarship Program has achieved many milestones. The first Graduate Scholarship honoring Club Founder and first President, Dr. Nicholas Padis, was established in 1986 as a merit award for academic excellence. In 1998 the merit-based Paideia Undergraduate Scholarship was established for a child of a Club member. Numerous other Named Scholarships have been established and awarded as well.
Since 1971 the Club has awarded more than $350,000 in scholarship grants to undergraduate and graduate students of Greek descent who reside in the Greater Philadelphia region. Scholarships from the Chios Society and the Cyprus Brotherhood were also administered by the Hellenic University Club Scholarship Committee.
In 2009 alone, 12 undergraduate and 3 graduate received scholarships from the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia totaling over $38,200.
