Lecture Programs

The Board of Directors of the Hellenic University Club plans numerous activities each year to appeal to our members. Events are detailed in our monthly newsletter, PAIDEIA, and on this web site.

We plan a variety of events in order to appeal to every member, junior to senior. Our Lecture Programs, for example, bring interesting speakers from our region and beyond to present illustrated talks to our members. Lecture topics usually, but not always, focus on a Greek theme. Some are scholarly talks on an ancient Greek theme (archaeology, drama, the Olympics), and some are lighter, contemporary programs (musical recitals, museum excursions, wine-tasting). Occasionally we invite a member of our Club to speak on his or her area of expertise. These lectures are frequently held at Drexel University in Center City.

Once every decade, we organize a major symposium – a daylong event featuring speakers of international renown who come together to discuss aspects of a single topic or theme. In conjunction with the 1976 American Bicentennial, we organized 3 half-day symposia on the themes: Contributions of Greek-Americans to The Arts …The Natural Sciences … The Social Sciences.

In 1994, we presented a daylong symposium on the theme: The 2500th Anniversary of Democracy. And in 2004, our symposium topic was: Metropolis: Classical Athens and Philadelphia.
